There’s some great news from Dagda Publishing today for the many (and quite ardent) fans of Laura L. Enright’s terrific vampire novel, “To Touch the Sun.”  Its sequel, “Ujaali,” will be released on July 31st.

That sounds like some eagerly awaited summer reading for vampire fiction fans.  Dagda will also soon release the book’s cover, as well as information about how to pre-order.

Authors Against Book Piracy Blog Tour: Day Six

29 May

Joleene, good timing! I just posted my review of Ties of Blood on both The Book Marketing Network and my WordPress blog, Readsalot 🙂

Amaranthine by Joleene Naylor

Welcome to day one of the authors against piracy book tour. The point of this tour is to draw awareness to the problem of ebook piracy and to show would-be pirates that there are plenty of places to get free (or cheap), legitimate, legal books. Each day an author (or authors) will be giving away book(s) for free, so be sure to stop by every day this week for some great freebie reads! And be sure to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway for a chance to win a 20$ Amazon gift card!

pirated percentage

The average adult reads/purchases 11 books a year. In thirty years they would have accumulated 330 books. 12% of 330 is roughly 40 – meaning that 40 of those books statistically speaking would be pirated. Imagine if 12% of your ebooks were pirated copies. Would you have more or less than the average?

What I Am Reading

29 May

Ties of Blood by Joleene Naylor

http://www.amazon.com/Ties-Blood-Amaranthine-Book-3-ebook/dp/B005M9…

Ah, yes… book 3 in the Amaranthine Series.

Does it feel like we have been here before? Ties of Blood marks the sixth book I have reviewed by Joleene Naylor-if you include Strange Portals-which features two of her short stories and was edited by her. Joleene, what can I say? You just keep me coming back for more 🙂

So, I was wondering how I was going to tackle this review, given that it is number 3 in the series. I think that it is pretty much impossible not to at least give out spoilers from the first two novels. For those of you reading this that have not read Shades of Gray, or Legacy of Ghosts, I highly recommend taking a look at my reviews of those two books.

Okay, now that you are up to speed, book 3 picks up where Legacy of Ghosts leaves off. Katelina and Jorick have survived the ordeal with Kateesha’s coven and now have to face the repercussions of Katelina’s actions. They are summoned to the Citadel to face Malick. There are some tense moments here when our heroes are unsure what their futures hold-or if they have futures…

For me, Ties of Blood keeps the thrill ride rolling. I always feel for Katelina as she gets more and more enmeshed in this undead world. Book 3 also sees the delightful addition of Verchiel, a red-headed asian vampire with clown eyebrows? Yes, he is very interesting and gives some comic relief to the brooding performance of Oren and the often angry and abrupt Jorick. What new vampire characters will Katelina encounter in book 4?

Guess we will find out when I get around to reading Ashes of Deceit.

lost sales

If each of those pirated books was priced at the median $2.99 price, that would mean that $2.8 billion would represent 936,454,849 books. In other words, every book published in 2009 (a total of 1,052,803 as reported by Bowker) could have been pirated 889 times EACH.

indie earnings

$1,000 is also roughly the average cost to rent a one bedroom apartment (in a city center) for one month. In one year, the average indy author makes enough to pay one month’s rent, meanwhile Attributor estimates lost revenue across the industry from pirated books at  $2,800,000 a year. That’s a lot of rent payments.

Three million. That’s roughly the population of the state of Mississippi. It’s also the estimated number of Americans who suffer from epilepsy. And, oddly enough, roughly three million people in America are allergic to nuts. Fun fact: It’s also the number of books published in the U.S. in 2010. A years worth of books in every genre downloaded in…
