No More Executioner Stories on Amazon

9 Nov

Amaranthine by Joleene Naylor

The short version: Through no decision of my own, there will be no more Tales of the Executioner stories  published on Amazon. Those that are already there will either disappear or change to a $.99 price in the coming months. This also effects the Road to Darkness short story.

So get your Amazon copies now.

The long version: While Smashwords has always allowed an author to set their book price to free (as well as distributing that free book to other retailers, like Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks), Amazon hasn’t. AN author who publishes on Amazon has to set their work (even if it’s a 3,000 word story) to at least $0.99. After that, there have been two ways to get your story priced to free. 1) become exclusive to Amazon – so your story appears ONLY on Amazon and nowhere else – and get a week of free…

Poems-for-All releases four mini-books of my writing!

26 Oct

Eric Robert Nolan, Author

I’m honored today to see the Poems-for-All project publish four of its signature “miniature books” featuring my work – two with my flash fiction and two with my poetry. Poems-for-All is a unique and truly inventive California-based publisher that produces these mini-books and then distributes them for free in variety of public places. That way, they’re “scattered like seeds” and can reach and surprise new readers – and maybe even create new lovers of poetry. (They’re even shared in Scotland at the St. Andrews International Poetry Festival.) All four of the mini-books containing my writing feature beautiful artwork by publisher Robert Hansen. (I just love the covers!)

The first flash fiction mini-book features my 100-word horror story, “There in the Bags” (just in time for Halloween). The second features my responses to the popular online Six-Word Sci-Fi Story Challenge.

The first mini-book containing my poetry contains the first stanza of…

A very short review of the Season 7 premiere of “American Horror Story” (2017)

28 Sep

Eric,
I think ‘Coven’ was the best season of AHS. If you want to give this show another shot, I’d say check that one out.

I did get several episodes into last season (Hotel), and was impressed with Lady Gaga’s performance.

My least favorite season was probably ‘Freakshow’, though I would recommend checking out the youtube video of Jessica Lange’s rendition of David Bowie’s ‘Life On Mars?’

Eric Robert Nolan, Author

I finally got around to watching my first episode of “American Horror Story” last night; I started with this season’s critically praised premiere.  (People have been enthusiastically recommending this show to me for years, and “Game of Thrones” taught me that the bandwagon isn’t always a bad thing.)

I can’t say that I was overly impressed.  Season 7’s opening episode, entitled “Election Night,” consists mostly of heavy-handed political commentary with caricaturized portrayals of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters.  Nearly none of the characters are likable; not even the one played by the terrific Evan Peters.  (Yes, comics fans, that’s none other than Quicksilver from the latest “X-Men” movies.)

There is a lot of “scary clown” horror here, as anyone who’s seen any marketing for the show at all should know.  Between that and the political elements, I suspect I am not the right audience for this show.  I…

A review of Season 1 of “Jessica Jones” (2015)

27 Aug

Eric,
I too put off watching Jessica Jones. I had already watched both seasons of Daredevil and the season of Iron Fist (above you put in Iron Man, but I knew what you meant). Once I found out The Defenders was about to start, my girlfriend and I binge watched all 13 episodes of Jessica Jones in a matter of 4 days.

She is easily my favorite character of these Marvel Netflix series. I enjoy her sarcasm and anti-social attitude. I also found it amusing that she basically had a single set of clothes that comprised her wardrobe.

Eric Robert Nolan, Author

Netflix’ “Jessica Jones” (2015) is easily one of the best things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; I’d rate it a 9 out of 10.  It’s smart, it’s funny and it’s extremely dark — I don’t want to spoil too much by revealing the modus operandi of Season 1’s villain, but his manner of destroying his victims is utterly disturbing.  (I’ve mentioned before how his powers seem like a plot device from a Stephen King novel.)  Although this series excellently retains a “comic book” feel (due in part to its episodic format), its story elements frequently feel like something out of a John Carpenter film.  And, although I know I’m repeating myself yet again, this Hell’s Kitchen niche of the MCU feels like its chosen stage for horror-thrillers.

The cast is excellent.  Krysten Ritter is perfect as the titular, hard-drinking, antihero private detective.  Mike Colter is nearly as good in the…
