A review of Season 1 of “Jessica Jones” (2015)

27 Aug

I too put off watching Jessica Jones. I had already watched both seasons of Daredevil and the season of Iron Fist (above you put in Iron Man, but I knew what you meant). Once I found out The Defenders was about to start, my girlfriend and I binge watched all 13 episodes of Jessica Jones in a matter of 4 days.

She is easily my favorite character of these Marvel Netflix series. I enjoy her sarcasm and anti-social attitude. I also found it amusing that she basically had a single set of clothes that comprised her wardrobe.

Netflix’ “Jessica Jones” (2015) is easily one of the best things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; I’d rate it a 9 out of 10.  It’s smart, it’s funny and it’s extremely dark — I don’t want to spoil too much by revealing the modus operandi of Season 1’s villain, but his manner of destroying his victims is utterly disturbing.  (I’ve mentioned before how his powers seem like a plot device from a Stephen King novel.)  Although this series excellently retains a “comic book” feel (due in part to its episodic format), its story elements frequently feel like something out of a John Carpenter film.  And, although I know I’m repeating myself yet again, this Hell’s Kitchen niche of the MCU feels like its chosen stage for horror-thrillers.

Book Review: Secret Diary of PorterGirl

30 Jul

I thought that reblogging this old review of Lucy’s first PorterGirl book would be an appropriate way of helping to celebrate the release of the newest installment in her series.

It's the book. You can buy it by clicking on it. Go on, you know you want. to.

Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? I recall from my childhood watching film adaptations of the works of Agatha Christie. One of my favorites that I still remember is Murder on the Orient Express.  What was key in these type of stories was not only the multiple possibilities of suspects, but the uniqueness of each of the characters. In fact, as the drama unfolds, I even started to like many of these people, knowing full well that one of them was going to end up being the murderer.

Lucy Brazier manages to mix elements of this style of mystery with experiences of her own past employment as a Deputy Head Porter at a prestigious English college. In this case, Old College, provides the setting for a pantheon of quirky characters that will delight the reader. As the list of professors and Fellows unfolds, I found myself reminded of…

I’ve written another piece over at The Nudge Wink Report.

Since Doctor Who has just cast the thirteenth Doctor and it is wonderful news that the Doctor’s shoes are being filled by a woman, I thought that it would be great to write a piece in support of feminism, female role models and why I think Jodie Whittaker will be awesome in the role.
